While each state has different laws and requirements that state why you would need SR22 insurance, there are generally 4 reasons why you need the coverage.

You need to understand that the SR 22 is only a form or certificate that provides proof to the Department of Motor Vehicles that you have car insurance. While you can have full coverage, the SR22 proves that you have at a minimum of liability insurance coverage for your car.

If you have to have an SR-22, then you need to understand that there is one binding issue with it. If your auto insurance policy is canceled or terminated, then the insurance company is required by law to notify the DMV of this issue. This will usually result in your drivers license being suspended or revoked until you can provide proof again that you have the coverage that is required of you.

The main reason that you would be required to have an SR22 certificate is if you have been classified as a high risk driver. While not all offenses that could classify you as high risk apply, there are generally 4 traffic offenses that would.

  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs (DUI)
  • Driving while intoxicated (DWI)
  • Numerous traffic offenses or a few serious ones
  • Having an at-fault accident without car insurance

Most of the time, the courts will determine when an SR 22 is required. However, if your drivers license has been suspended or revoked for any reason, this is usually another cause of the need for SR22 certificates.

The term that you have to maintain your proof of car insurance coverage for with the SR22 can vary. One of the general lengths of time is for 3 to 5 years for most first offenses of DUI/DWI.

Finding the cheapest SR22 insurance that you can will take a little time, however if you are required to have it you can find some good deals on rates. Searching online is a good way to be able to find and compare car insurance rates easily.
